Got into IPN while with FH, now changing jobs... IPN HR question

Published

I work for the parent company of Florida Hospital. I currently work in an IT position that doesn't require an RN. IPN knows I'm working but doesn't really care because it's not "in nursing". I got the job before I had a Florida license, I've been enrolled with IPN since moving from NC. I have a clear and active license in FL, not on OIG list, in good standing with IPN. I'm in IPN for my bipolar disorder. I had no problem getting through the FH HR "firewall" because I'm not working as a nurse and thus didn't disclose my IPN status.

I have to move out of my job, it's not a good fit and it's going to affect my sobriety. I have applied to RN and non-RN jobs (nothing in the clinical setting) within the organization. My contract with IPN states I only have to tell my direct supervisor of my enrollment. My support group has advised me to NOT tell HR because I'm already in the organization. I do plan on telling my supervisor upon getting a job offer as required by IPN but wonder if they'll want to disclose to HR.

I'm feeling uneasy about not telling HR and it coming to bite me in the a** later, but I've learned that flying under the radar with IPN is key.

Thoughts?

You're right that you'll have to tell your new supervisor when you start the new job, they'll be the one doing your quarterly meetings/reporting. But I'd say it's totally up to that person to tell HR, not you. Having said that, they are going to have to tell HR, their hospital legal department or Risk Management will freak way the hell out and possibly try to squash the job offer. Believe me it happens all the time. Hiring managers want a monitored nurse but legal or HR won't allow it. The hiring manager would be putting their job on the line by hiring a nurse who's in monitoring without telling their upper management, and someone up the line is gonna want to run it by HR. Not that HR will necessarily refuse you, just that they're more cautious.

You may be okay because you already work for them, but in my area, Florida Hospital wants nothing to do with IPN nurses. I don't know if it's different in other parts of the state, maybe it is. I am having a terrible time even finding a job because applications are submitted through HR, you may not because you have a clear FL license. I have to complete IPN before my license will be clear. Please keep us updated... I'll be very interested to know how this plays out for you. You have to disclose to your immediate supervisor and if you have a key restriction, somebody will end up knowing. Good luck to you!
