Don't fret it kid! As a fellow student I know what it's like to do those damn skills. I had my first checkoffs yesterday and had one of the teachers in my face most of the time. I asked her if she wanted the catheter or should I give it to the dummy. Then I smilled and told her to sit down. But that's who I am and can get away with those things because I am used to talking to people. I think that is the biggest hurdle for people to overcome to get through these skills tests. If it's hard to talk infront of the class then the added pressure of just the instrutor in there is rough! In my experience there is only 4 things you can do:
1) Laugh- no one likes a serious person all the time. Forgive your mistakes and move on. No one ever dies in lab (that's un-founded but sounded good) relax and take the info they give you. I bet no one there wants you to fail.
2) Practice by yourself- know the steps!
3) Practice with peer- they can catch the things you miss
4) Ask questions- If you're one of those people who never ask questions because you watched Patch Adams too many times and don't want to look dumb in class (guilty!) you have to get over it! We are all there to learn. what may be common knowledge to one person may be Greek to another!
You will get better! Never give up and remember why you chose nursing!
That's crazy, I got a good laugh out of it~ I needed it.
Thanks for the advice~ I will do better next time!!
