Good 2nd Degree Nursing Programs for Public/ Community Nurses

Hello,

I am about to graduate as a Sociology/ Spanish major soon and nursing has always interested me. I am taking some of the post back-courses before I graduate and am beginning to search schools/ look for shadowing experience.

I am more lenient towards public/ community nursing programs, since that is where my preference is. I was hoping that someone may be able to help me narrow my search to a school that has a program with this type of specialty.

I am not looking for the most competitive, top notch program as I don't think my standardized tests with permit me. However, I do have a decent GPA at 3.6. Any types of suggestions would really be appreciated.

Hellow Evana. We do not have specific schools for entry level licensure for a specific area. In general all programs teach the same subjects and take the same licensure test at the national level to become a registered nurse. You can do that at the associate or bachelor's level. However since you already have a bachelor's or will soon, then it would prob be easier to get your BSN. After that you can do some specialization into public health or community nursing, although it is not always required.

I would go speak to a few nurses that work in those areas, you could call and see if they will meet with you. They can tell you what their job is like, and how they got there. You have to do all the general nursing things and rotate to every area of the hospital prior to becoming a nurse.

I would recommend a BSN program as they have a courses specific to community health/public health. In California and other states you have to have a BSN to work as a PHN and have a cert form the BON.
