Good LPN correctional jobs

I live in Western Maryland, small town, rain and snow and a local prison with 2200 inmate population. Lots of work there if you want it.

I do quality nursing care whether it be on "inmates" or patients in a nursing home or hospital.

If I can't give quality care to "inmates" I'm going to get out of nursing and drive a truck.

76% of people in prisons in this country are non-violent offenders which means they are NOT murderers, rapists, child molesters and the like.

These days you can get 10 years in prison because you're poor and get caught stealing bread 3 times or more to keep from starving.

What does the state do for the inmates that is considered pampering?

Okay, let me clear something up. I don't think ANY prison is the lap of luxury. I've only been in two that I even thought were humane. I loathe and despise our so-called criminal justice and correctional system.

Some prisons are unbelievable. If you have never been inside a super-max prison, you have no concept of the conditions under which we hold some of our prisoners. Animals in a zoo live in better conditions (some zoos). On the other hand, for inmates at a lower security level, it probably beats life on the streets. County jails are usually not so awful -- and sentences are shorter.

There are some prisons, like the medium security prison I worked at in Maryland, where inmates wandered around the health unit at will. They were allowed to be insolent and verbally abusive to staff. They were rushed to the health unit every time they snivelled a snivel. There was one guy who was escorted over every evening for a breathing treatment. He was never remotely in need of one.

Then there are prisons where patients bleed out from a GI bleed before they are ever allowed to go to medical -- inmates who die on route to the hospital because they are in respiratory distress and custody won't let them have oxygen for the trip. There are some competent, conscientious prison doctors, but not many. There are some competent, conscientious prison nurses, but not many.

Finally, whether a prison is loosey-goosey or run like Stalag 17, I rarely have an inmate disrespect me. They know I will take the time to find out if they have a problem and I will do my best to help if they do. If they don't -- good bye! The only nurses who consistently have problems with inmates are bad nurses. Yeah, I said BAD nurses. Sure, we all get tired and fed up at times. There are so many of them and so few of us. But some of us take pride and satisfaction in doing a good job under difficult conditions.

Sorry Aurora, I apparantly misunderstood your remark. I apologize for that. I agree with your comment totally.

And insofar as bad nurses I've seen a few in my day and you're right they are the ones who are disrespected by the inmates.

And the inmates? Ha, some of them are the biggest whiners in the business. They seem to forget that they get medical treatments that I can't afford unless I have health insurance. But then again a fair number of the inmates seem to be okay people who got a bad break in life.

But all in all I would not want to be a resident at any prison in this country.

You said you work in Maryland, I assume at a correctional facility. I work at the one in Western Md. The only other ones I know about are Hagerstown, ECI in southern maryland, and Jessup in baltimore.

Shortly I am heading for Florida to work because I am too old for this frigid northern weather! And I will more than likely seek out a correctional facility to work at.

Gary, thanks for the apology, but I guess I'm dense because I didn't take offense from your post!

I was at ECI while also taking care of my dad, who had broken a leg. It would be better there if it weren't PHS. Gawd, how I hate 'em! I think Western Maryland is a tougher prison, actually.

I have also done corrections in Arizona and Kentucky. Now working in California as registry RN in the state prisons. Good luck in Florida. Being warm is very important!

I would love to work in a real prison! I've seen them on TV. Where in western Maryland-(city) is this tough prison located?

I want to thank anyone who replies to this post. Please be advised that if I don't answer it's not because I'm being rude it is because 99% of the time I can't log in. I love to hear everyone's opinion even if it is completely different from mine.

hi i have a question im in school to become a LPN im in Arizona im thinking about applying for correctional nurse once i graduate does anyone know how much the starting pay is for a lpn in a correctional facility in arizona ??
