Going to MED school after BSCN degree?

Hi everyone,

Has anyone ever applied to med school after obtaining their degree in nursing?

I was told by a few people that because you graduate in a Science program, you are eligable to write the med test. Is that true?

Could anyone route my in the path to this information?

I would really like to know more about it, and I have had not too much luck with it recently.

I don't know about Canada, but in the US there are far many more classes needed before taking the MCAT (which you would need to get into med school here). I would check out the med schools you are interested, look up their web site and most will tell you what basic classes are needed before applying. I would assume you would need physics, calc, inorganic/organic chems some lit/writing classes and other basics....Also try the website that has info on applying for the med school entrance exam, it will let you know where your knowledge base must be to be sucsessfull at the exam. My husband is a nursing student and looked into med school. It certainly is attainable with your degree, but you would have to take some other science courses first. If you're passionate enough about it, you are on the right path and working as a nurse through medical school would be helpful for paying the bills. Just a piece of advice, don't cut yourself short because of a few science classes and dont let anyone tell you that it's not attainable!

Most medical schools in Canada do not require you to have a Bachelor degree in a specific field in order to apply. They do, however, require that you take certain courses such as first year biology, chem, physics, second year BioChem, Organic chem, etc. These requirements change from school to school.

In terms of writing the MCAT (almost all schools require this--the only one that I know that doesn't is McMaster University) you do not have to have taken any specific courses but you will not do well unless you have taken Bio, Chem, Physics, etc.

Going from Nursing to Med School is definately not out of the question...infact, if you check the stats of people getting into Med School you'll find that some of the applicants are former Nursing students.
