GN Residency Route

Published

Just out of curiosity -- has anyone NOT go through the GN residency program route but instead went straight into work as an RN? Im having trouble getting into a GN residency program here in Houston. Like many other out there, I have bills to pay and a family to feed so I need a job. Thanks in advance for your input.

Anyone have any ideas on who is still hiring/willing to hire in Houston or even anywhere in Texas. I have my BSN from a top school, good grades, experience as a social worker and as a pt tech but, on the verge of being homeless? I just don't get it. I think a lot of hospitals are very biased in their hiring practices. i don't know what I will do...

i suppose there arent that many jobs in houston? is it very competitive to get into internship program? how can you increase the chance of getting in?

I don't think it is an issue of just wanting to start in a residency program, most hospitals I've looked at that have residency programs do not offer any other positions to new grads. If you can get a job directly there's no reason not to go that route. The best thing you can do is apply for everything. Just need to get that magical 1 year experience.

I was hired on as a new grad outside the typical residency/internship program and instead did a 3 month preceptorship with another nurse. I am with one of the major hospitals in Houston in the ER. I advise applying for any and every job posted, you CAN get hired on to the big hospitals outside the June/January internship programs regardless of what they post online.
