GI ASC skills

Published

I've just began a new job, first after getting licensed at an GI ambulatory surgery center.

im just at my first week and need advice on how to be more prepared for the patients that come in with more comorbidities than the average Htn, cholesterol so that I can connect the dots quicker and provide the correct information to the MD if the procedure must be cancelled. Also I don't want to rush my pt during the interview but what is the best way to redirect the conversation back to the questions that I need to be answered. I don't like to interrupt bc it might uncover more info that may be pertinent to anesthesia or procedure.

Any recommendations ? Tia

Congratulations on your new job! I strongly encourage you to join your specialty nurse association - the Society of Gastroenterology Nurses and Associates (SGNA). Check out their web site - it has a lot of resources, including standards of practice. My recent experience with regulatory agencies (JC & CMS) indicates that they are referring to SGNA standards and guidelines for GI labs, so this is definitely the way to go.
