Hey everyone, I was wondering if anyone else has applied to the nursing program at Georgia Gwinnett College for Fall 2023. I'm going crazy waiting to know if I got in or not. Anyone know how truly competitive it is? I meet all the requirements but I'm still so worried.
I got an 87 on the TEAS, institutional GPA is 3.8, science GPS is 4.0, overall GPA is much lower though because they made me submit a transcript from my previous school from 10 years ago and I did poorly but none of the classes are even counting, and I only had about 40 volunteer hours.

Hi, there. I saw your post on a previous GGC forum, but I'd like to share my own experiences as someone who has been through the Nursing program. Acceptance is very competitive and they only accept ~ 32 students per cohort (32 in the Fall, 32 in the Spring). They may take 1 or 2 more students depending on special circumstances, so you can say up to 33 or 34, but somewhere around that cutoff.
When I applied for Fall 2016, I actually got waitlisted and was told that there were 2 people in front of me waiting for a seat. Thankfully, both people dropped, withdrew, or accepted an offer elsewhere, so I was next in line for a seat. I got my official acceptance letter in late April. Usually by mid March or early April is when you should hear something. I'd also like to share that I never received a "waitlisted" letter or email. So basically, they only sent out "accepted" or "rejected" letters. I found out I was waitlisted when the Program Coordinator and I spoke via phone.
A note about volunteering. Back when I applied for Fall 2016 admission, we were told that they wanted to see a record or history of volunteering. This means you did not do some random, last minute volunteer hours just to qualify for a seat in the program. The program director at the time really emphasized this and said that they wanted to see individuals who are committed to serving, and not just volunteering at the last minute for the sake of getting into the program. So take that with a grain of salt. You'll also eventually find out that not everyone who qualifies or has the best stats gets in. There was someone in my cohort who got in and made Bs in all their science courses. Another person got a perfect score on the math section of the TEAS test. Someone else got in with a 74 TEAS score. So it really depends on the individual and they don't just look at one thing. If I remember correctly, your TEAS score counts about 40% of your application. The most important thing is to be well rounded in your application. Definitely impress with your personal statement too.
GGC's program was very challenging in my opinion. However, I believe that their program is probably one of the best options for Nursing schools out there. I felt very prepared as an RN and can still remember a lot of things that we learned. We have small class sizes and the professors know who you are as individuals. You're not just a number or grade to them. You don't have those large lecture halls with over 100 students. They will learn your names and meet you halfway as long as you do your fair share of the work. You really get to develop that close bond with your clinical instructors and professors, and more than likely you'll have some professors again for more than one semester or class. Some of my closest friends today are friends that I made in Nursing school, and we still keep in touch regularly. You'll really learn to lean on one another during the program and support each other!
Lastly, this program will humble you. If you are used to earning As and Bs, you may end up making a few Cs or failing a few exams (anything less than a 75 is failing). You'll be reminded constantly that your exam average must be a 75 in order to pass your classes. You'll need to have that 75 exam average before other assignments are factored into your grade. No 75 exam average (C) = no pass. Even our class president during first semester fell behind and made some mistakes. Unfortunately, he did not progress with us in the next semester due to the "75" rule. But he eventually graduated with a different cohort and is now working as an RN. So, this experience is truly a learning experience that will humble everyone. I wish you the best of luck! Feel free to ask me anything. I love to share advice and words of wisdom to the next generation of nurses.
@renznoi5 thank you so much for your response that is such great information! I really want to go to GGC. I'm mainly nervous because my circumstances are a little different from most students there, I'm not fresh out of high school, I already have a bachelors and returned to college to pursue nursing. My first time in college I did not do well though. GGC made me submit transcripts despite retaking everything so my institutional GPS is great but overall is terrible because it is factoring in allllllll those transfer credits that really aren't even contributing to everything, it's so frustrating. I did try to email the nursing department to get an idea of the acceptance rate but didn't get an answer. I know how many people they generally accept but am curious about how many applicants they get.

That's a very valid concern, but I wouldn't discount yourself just yet. We had quite a number of non-traditional students in my cohort. While a majority of us were fresh out of high school and were working on our first degree, we had folks who were parents and had kids, some in their 30s, 40s and even 50s. It's definitely a possibility, so I say see what they say. You never know, you might get a seat. When I applied before, I know the department had gotten a few hundred applications. It definitely was not in the high hundreds or one thousand. Best of luck to you!

Hi there! I also applied for the 2023 Fall Program.
My Stats:
Overall GPA 3.78
Science GPA 3.67 (A+ Principles of Chem, A+ AP1, B Principles of Chem 2, currently taking Microbiology and AP2, hoping to get A's)
TEAS 87
Volunteer Hours 60
It is definitely competitive. A professor shared the average acceptance stats and they are:
TEAS 85+
Overall GPA 3.7 +
Science GPA 3.67 +
Of course there are always exceptions and my friend knows people in the program with slightly lower stats (Though not by much!)
I hope we make it!
