Yes...I have.
Take it to a contract lawyer. UPMC is getting smarter, but they have been known to generate unenforcable contracts.
If the contract is enforceable, you will generally have to pay 100% of it back.
What you should've done is either not cashed the check until you knew if you were going to stay, or banked the money so you could pay it back if you left. I held the check because I moved one year into a two year contract.
I later learned that many of the contracts were unenforceable, and UPMC was not able to recover the money. I'm sure they've wised up since then.
If you don't mind my asking, what year were you? I might try to get out too. I was told that the first couple classes got out of theirs. I graduated 2007. Thanks!
I started working for UPMC in 1999...but keep in mind, I returned my check before it was learned that the contracts were unenforceable.
Contact a lawyer. There are more than a few in the Pittsburgh area that wouldn't mind getting a piece of UPMC.
Keep in mind, it's a powerful organization. They have they own political action committee, and Rep. Altmire was a former (recent) executive for UPMC and a big cheerleader for them in Congress.

Has anyone been successful in getting out of their 2 year contract with UPMC? Are there any health systems that will buy it out? And, what happens if we choose to leave UPMC?
