Hey guys I was wondering if there was anybody who was accepted into UNLV's nursing program without all their pre-req's done? And if so what classes were unfinished?
I am hoping to apply to UNLV NP for Fall '11 but I wont be finished with all my pre-req's until the end of summer '11. I am taking Anat II, Micro, Anthropology, Eng 231, and Math 97 this Spr'11 semester and will be hopefully taking Chem 110 and 111, Math 120, Nutrition and Dance 101 this summer . I have a 3.86 GPA and I know I will pull all A's in these classes but I'm not sure if I can get into Chem 110 and 111 in the same summer. Although the website suggests taking them both in the same summer i'm not sure if its possible.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Acceptance into UNLV is not based solely on GPA:
http://nursing.unlv.edu/pdf/bsn%20pdfs/hesi-a2_calculation_worksheet_08-09.pdf
The max amount of points possible is 100.7, note that the overall composite score on the HESI does not factor into your points(its confusing).
Classes you are currently in when you apply count as zeros on the sheet. My my calculations you will lose 5.9 points for Chem 110, 5.9 for Chem 111, 7.44 for Math 120, and, 8.9 for Nurs 299 for a total of 28.4.
This leaves you with a highest possible score of 71.6, and that would only be possible with 100 percent on the HESI and 4.0 GPA in all your completed pre-req classes.
The minimum admitted score is usually above 80, with Fall being the highest historically. That said, I applied for spring 2011 while currently in chem 111 , and with total point tally of 81 and was told I had no chance of getting in, however I did get in and start next week, so you never know how low the scores might end up.
P.S. 18 credits over the summer is insane, you will have to get a waiver from the university to take that many.
Good Luck!
woohoo congrats! Thanks for the reply! How far ahead did you apply before the deadline to get in? Im taking 19 this spring semester but Im pretty sure I can handle it...im insane about school :)
My signing session, when I actually submitted my application, was about a month before the deadline. You have to sign up for a signing session where they go over all your pre-req classes, gpa, english proficiency, and HESI to make sure you have everything done.
However, I sent in all my transcripts about a month before that as UNLV can be quite slow about processing them. So if your taking classes at other institutions make sure you start sending those in to prove you are currently attending the correct classes.
Also, meet with a health science advisor as they can be pretty helpful about making sure your classes actually work correctly as pre-requisites, the requirements can be quite confusing(for instance certain Philosophy classes work for your humanities while others don't).
I took 18 credits this past Fall so I know how you feel. I took a number online at CSN which significantly lightened the time load, just not having to drive to class lets you have so much extra time. Just a word of warning with the Nurs 299, it is a time suck, especially during summer, you are expected to read between 150 to 300 pages a night and then take a quiz/test on it the next day, plus two major papers/projects. I really can't recommend taking that class concurrently with any science/math class.
yea I just e-mailed them yesterday about an advising session and am waiting to hear back. Gosh I hope not because I know math and chemistry will be hard for me. Is nurs 299 available online? If i dont get in then I will just wait until spr 12 admission but every semester that passes is another semester not doing my best :/
I think they do have Nurs 299 online but you still have to come in once a week for tests and you still have the big group projects. I would take stuff like Eng 231 and Anthropology online instead.
Some classes you can only attempt twice, from http://nursing.unlv.edu/pdf/bsn%20pdfs/bsn_admission_criteria.pdf:
"A grade of B (3.00) or above must have been earned in either the first or second enrollment (an audit, drop, or withdrawal counts as an enrollment) in the following prerequisites courses: Fundamentals of College Mathematics (MATH 120) or College Algebra (MATH 124); Anatomy and Physiology (BIOL 223/224-within last five years); Microbiology (BIOL 251); and Nutrition and Development Across the Lifespan (NURS 299)"
In my opinion it would be better to spread your classes out over 3 semesters rather than just 2, as you will be missing so many points its unlikely you will get in for Fall 2011 anyway, and having to drop courses will lose you points(on the first link).
However, see what the counselor says.
Yea i might just take the chem 111 in the fall and try for spr 12 admission. although it feels like giving in to do so. I wish I had known I wanted to go to UNLV instead of CSN a year ago. I probably wouldnt feel so rushed then.
