Getting licensed in other states

U.S.A. Connecticut

Published

I've been looking into Travel Nursing and want to find out how I can get my LPN license in other states. When I graduated, I was told that due to my test scores, I was eligible for reciprocity. Is this true in all states or only a few? And, if not, how do you get around this?

After 20+ years in nursing, I'm amazed at the number of phone calls and letters I'm receiving for positions!

Thanks for any and all replies.

From what I understand, there are currently about 15 states that are members of the "Compact" where your license is reciprocal and you do not have to apply for a license to work in another of the states who are also members of the compact - there are also I believe another 4 states who will soon be joining this Compact - unfortunately, Connecticut is not a member of this compact nor is it mentioned as being one of those planning to join

It is also my understanding that once you are licensed in one state to get licensed in another state basically all you have to do is apply to that state's board and pay their fee.

I am sure I will quickly be corrected if any of this isn't fact!

Hope this helps

Go to the state where you want to practice's website. You will find the steps to applying for licensure by recipricity. There are different procedures for different states.

ei) If you are not in the compact state agreement such as Iowa to MA, then I needed to go to the MA board of nursing website and i found that I had to give 205 dollars to the board of MA and then fill out an application. And, I had to contact NURSYS (national certification verification) (or in other states..just give them persmission to verify licensure from your state to the other state). MA said that it takes about 3-4 weeks to get a license after they have approved my licensure by reciprocity.
