Getting a C in Biology course, should I retake or move on move forward?

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Hello to everyone,

This is my first post at allnurses. I made a switch to Nursing earlier this year and am now taking the required Science courses. I'm 26 and have been out of school for the past three so this semester was quite a load and in retrospect, should have probably only taken Biology. There are a few more weeks and I found out I will most likely be making a C. My current GPA is a 3.1 with about 70 credit hrs. I'm worried this C will bring that below 3.

My question is, should I retake this Biology class or move on to the next and just try harder next time? It took until after my second exam to realize what study techniques are working. At first I tried to cram it all into the last week studying for hours at a time. That only caused stress. Now I see that studying a little bit every day or every other day is helping me retain the information.

I still have Biology II, Microbiology, Organic Chemistry, A&P I and II, College Algebra to take but I'm not sure these will bring me up to that 3.5 or higher.

Have any of you made a C in any of your science courses? If so, what did you do? Thanks.

I think you have plenty of more classes to go to bring up your GPA.

Use your study skills and make A's in as many classes as you can. :)

I did not make C's in any of my sciences. I think the more important question is: did you understand the material, or not? Going forward it will only get harder and you really need a good understanding of Gen bio when you move on. That being said...if you did understand the material, I would keep on moving. I did get a C in Soc and English II and my weighted GPA ended at 3.8 and my overall GPA was a 3.6.. you still have time to make it up as long as you "got It". I wish you good luck as you move forward!!

I got a C in general bio I and I let it go. I got a C+ in general bio II and I also let that go because I had about five more science classes to go. I got an A- in Inorganic Chem and I'm on my way to an A in Micro and an A in Anatomy. My GPA is now at a 3.5. I can't really explain why I did so bad in the general bio but then did better in the higher level science classes. I say move on because whether or not you get an A in general bio doesn't mean anything about the later classes. My friend got a A- in general bio but she's failing anatomy. I don't remember anything from general bio and I'm doing great in both my Anatomy and Micro class. Some schools don't even require general bio. So I say go foward for now, if you keep getting C's then you should start retaking but one class doesn't mean anything UNLESS your school has a policy saying you can't get a C.

From what you said, it sounds like you'll be getting a C because you messed up on your first test, I think that's common. Mainly because you have to get a feel for the way the professor makes the test. But who knows you might get a C+ you weren't expecting.

I got a C in cellular biology when I began my prereqs about a year ago and I kept moving forward. Many of the nursing schools in my area didn't list general/cellular biology as a prerequisite, which is why I didn't retake it. I got 4.0s in both A&P 1 and 2, and I am doing well in micro currently. I agree with a previous poster, ask yourself if you aren't understanding the material or if you're not putting in the time. For me, I wasn't putting in enough study time, but I am making up for it now.
