how did you get your 1st job as a NP?

I was speaking to a NP friend of mine(she has been a NP for 25 yrs) and she reccomends since we live in a small county to actually ask the doctors if they are looking for a NP or would entertain the idea of a NP-because most of the NP jobs are not advertised. So how would i do that? What would you reccomend -most of the jobs are word of mouth and i haven't heard of many lately.
