Geriatrics

Does anyone prefer geriatrics over hospital. I'm not a nurse yet but worked in both settings and prefer LTC. I love building a relationship with them and the families. I would much rather work with a dementia patient than someone suffering from alcohol withdraw or care for a 20 year old who overdosed on heroin.

I've never work-worked in a hospital, just spent a lot of Med Surg time in clinicals and I hated it. I love the nursing homes, mostly because you can get to know the residents and their families--learning their quirks and what not. When you're working in the hospital, there's much more uncertainty, plus you are always being bombarded with different doctors doing rounds, half of which are buttholes.

I will be an RN and not many understand that I would rather work in LTC. Maybe there will not be as much competition for the job then. Win.win.

I've been an RN for 20 years and LOVE long term care. I have never worked in the hospital so I can't really compare the two but I could not be happier with the specialty I chose. Some people like it and some people hate it. Follow your heart.

I love long term care! At this point in my career I definitely prefer it to typical acute care nursing. I love that I get to develop relationships with residents and families, I really enjoy palliative care as well.
