Georgetown Accelerated BSN Fall 2010

Poppsymom, I haven't entered the program yet, but I do know that you are required to work full-time (36hrs/wk) for the 3-year contract. So, you would be taking the MSN program part-time. According to a group of students that we talked to on our tour of WHC, most recent grads plan to work for a while before continuing on with the MSN. They also mentioned that very few (like 1 or 2) of the people in their cohort were direct entry.

Probably in my cohort (we graduated recently), we had at least 30% of the class as direct entries. The majority of them are anesthesia so are off doing their prerequisite year of critical care. Of the others, I know of one FNP and one midwifery that are going directly to the MSN program at Georgetown. These are all non-WHC people. Of the WHC people, I know of two direct entries that decided to go elsewhere for grad school, but as I understand it, WHC is hapy for people to go to grad school part time.

Anyone got the scoop on what is going on with the WHC contracts? I heard they are "reviewing" them. Makes one wander if something has happened now that the first class of scholars has graduated.

Something did happen -- a couple of the December 2009 grads bailed out. I assume WHC is trying to come up with something more airtight.

I hope they send out the contracts soon. Have any of you guys sent in your deposits or are you waiting on the WHC info?

I'm nervous about committing three years to a certain hospital but it is nice to know that if something comes up you can opt out - just have to pay it back. I wonder if they are going to incorporate an interest rate with the pay back if people decide to bail? Who knows.

Hey all, I'm just wondering if there's anyone out there who has officially decided they're going to Gtown in the fall. It seems like most of you are still deciding/waiting for WHC's response. I know we were supposed to receive some sort of listserve email around the 15th, and we haven't yet...maybe they're waiting to get all of the deposits? Anyway, I'm just getting anxious about finding roommates and an apartment...so if there's anyone out there who has officially decided and is on the same wavelength, I'd love to chat about living situations!

Hi All,

I haven't posted on Allnurses for awhile, so I thought I'd do some catch up. FYI, this week I started my 2nd semester in the ABSN program at GU, and I'm not a WHC scholar. I'm paying for this program out of my own pocket and with private loans. I'm no "plant."

For those of you sitting on the fence about Georgetown, I can't urge you strongly enough to come here! This program is awesome - great city, great hospitals, great instructors (mostly), great campus facilities/sim lab, great social life (when you're not studying!), and a great place to live and work after you graduate. Georgetown BSN grads get jobs.

DC is a challenging place to live and work (traffic, cost of living, blah, blah, blah). If you want bucolic, move to BFE.

That being said, no program is perfect. A few of the instructors are smart, but lemons as teachers. The good news is, students get to submit written feedback about their instructors at the end of the semester in all classes, and ABSN students being somewhat older are quick to complain about things we don't like. Classes that are not working out with a particular instructor seem to get new instructors, going forward. The curriculum also is getting tweaked each semester, based on feedback from students and faculty.

Some might argue that you can get the same education at less expensive schools than GU. Not true. GU teaches you the same things you'll learn anywhere else. Only harder. Think about it: you'll be in a program full off super-smart geeks like yourself. GU knows this, and so they work you harder. You'll be a better nurse for it.

You can do this. If you've been accepted, GU thinks you can do this, too. Come here and be one of the best, with the best.

Final note: there's a bar in the on-campus restaurant strategically located right next to St. Marys (School of Nursing). It's there whenever you need it. :-))

The WHC contract reads as if you only receive a loan after you complete the program and become employed with the hospital. Did anyone else interpret that fact? I could be wrong, but that's what it seems to imply, not a tuition credit each semester. What do others think?

The contract is definitely a little confusing. I called and spoke with Patrick Durban as well as financial aid and they assured me that the 80% tuition would be covered up front while we were in school and not after we completed the program. They also said many of us have called with questions so they are yet again revising the contract and sending out another copy that is not a "loan forgiveness agreement". They seemed frustrated with the hospital but said due to the amount of transition occuring within the leadership roles at WHC, they were still in the process of fixing everything. The main thing is that it is still 80% tuition covered up front and spread out over the four semesters. They will be sending us an updated version that is personalized in the next week or so. He also said that the June 1st deadline was no longer firm - I would get that in writing though if any of you guys were planning on waiting to send in the deposit check just to be safe.

About the WHC contract: I'm dismayed to find out it is a loan forgiveness agreement, not technically a scholarship. Most scholarships are tax free. However, we have to pay taxes on any loan amount forgiven! For all the WHC people, are you still going to go?
