General Science requirement for CRNA schools

Nursing Students SRNA

Published

So, I am currently in an accelerated BSN program after getting another bachelor's degree in Biology and I am looking into Nurse Anesthetist programs in my area. A lot of schools state that you must have at least a 3.0 GPA in general science coursework. But not many of the schools actually state what general science coursework that want? Do they mean general Bio and General Chem? What about classes like Physics, Organic Chem, or even Statistics? A & P? Any information you guys have will be a big help to me!

Specializes in CVICU.

They all count toward your science GPA calculation. Some schools look at math and science, others just at science, and some do not seem to look at either. Do some research on your school, because they each seem to have their own individual preferences.

From what I have seen, chemistry seems to be a major focus for many schools along with statistics. So any chem/O chem/Bio Chem looks good. While all math/science classes count, many require you have recent chemistry or statistics classes taken within the last five years.

Of note, your nursing classes do not count as math science. This is what one of the schools I am applying to states in their admission requirements section: Courses that will help you with your anesthesia degree include chemistry (organic or inorganic), biochemistry, physics, calculus, algebra, statistics or pharmacology. they want you to have a 3.1-3.3 in math/science GPA to be competitive. Your Bio degree should look awesome to them!

Shadow, get experience in high level, high acuity and high volume ICU with a surgical background (SICU, CVICU, CTICU), get certifications, precept and keep working hard!

Good luck!
