Question about Mursing School Admissions

Nursing Students General Students

Hi everyone,

I am currently enrolled as a business major. I just started school last semester - I took English 101 and an english class. I had a HUGE change of heart and really want to be a nurse - I plan on taking now all the pre-reqs to get into a nursing program. I am still registerd as a business major - but will be taking all nursing pre-reqs. That wont make a difference when I apply to the nursing school as long as I have all pre-reqs correct?

It shouldn't, but check with your school. Some require you to be "pre-nursing" status to be eligible to apply or you must apply to the correct division of the college like health sciences.

For me that wasn't a factor. The school I attend it doesn't matter what your "major" is. I just finished all the prereq classes and applied for admission to the college of nursing, but check what your school's policy is first. They would be better able to tell you than anyone on here would.

The only way it could matter is if the nursing school you're applying to is part of the same university that you're currently attending. Even then, you could change your major just before you applied.

I'm curious though, why not just change your major to pre-nursing?

my school dosnt have a pre-nursing major.

they have a liberal arts major, maybe i should switch to that?

If your school doesn't have a pre-nursing major, I'm guessing they don't have a school of nursing. In that case, just speak with an academic adviser and see if one of their majors aligns with the prerequisites you need.

Your other option is just just be an undeclared major.

My school doesn't have a pre nursing major, but they have a nursing major. All it means, in my school, is that you can be in any darn major you like to apply, and they change it to nursing when you're done. I was in a Biology major up until I was accepted for nursing school. Hope that helps! :)

At my school, the day you select a major it is entered into the school's computer system. Once in the computer system, if the program changes at all, such as adding an additional class to the curriculum, you will not be required to take the class because you chose your major before they made the new change. I went to school with a few people that got really de-railed from their projected nursing school entry date because of small changes in the pre-reqs. I would definatly change your major, it may save you a lot of heartache. Of course, each school is different so you may not have that problem at your school. Good luck with everything!

At my school, your selected major is not an issue. It is just a tool to help you see what else you need to take to obtain such a degree. We do not have a pre-nursing major. I was listed as general until I was accepted into the program. You need to sit down with an advisor to find out what all is required to apply to the program. At my school you not only had to complete all pre req's, but take a Hesi entrance exam. The accepted list was determined by grade point and Hesi score. Therefore, your accumulative grade point was worth 50% and your score for this one test was worth 50%. The pressure to do well on the Hesi was huge. Find out how is works that way you can put your energy into what will matter. Make an appointment with the advisor and bring along all of you Q's. You need to do your homework now so that you do not waste time and money on things that do not matter. Your english classes are probably prereqs so there was no wasted time there. Yeah! Good luck.
