I am in my third year of nursing school and want to get a job as a nurse tech somewhere. i was just wondering what the difference is between a nurse tech and a stna and if i can get a job as either or if stna requires additional schooling?

I believe it depends on your state. But in Ohio, I heard that after your 1st semester of nursing school, you can test to become an STNA without any other additional classes. You can also work as a nurse tech as well. The difference between an STNA and a nurse tech is the title. Also nurse techs are usually in hospitals and STNAs are at long-term care facilities. I've seen a few STNAs at the hospitals but many at LTCs.

I agree with the previous poster, I think the main difference is what your state requires.

In Kentucky, we have SRNA, or state registered nurse assistants, which are by definition registered with the state and have taken a course and certification exam.

Kentucky isn't big on unlicensed techs, but if I'm not mistaken, techs are basically the same as nursing assistants but aren't licensed.

In my opinion, the best thing to do would be to contact the facility that you're looking to apply to, especially if they have a website and then see what positions they have, as well as the requirements for the positions.
