I just started nursing school, and we have started talking about care plans. I know there are a ton of books on care plans, but what is a good, but basic one that is good for me just starting out? Our instructor says it needs to have rationals in the book also??

I used the Sixth Edition Nursing Diagnosis Handbook A guide to Planning Care by Betty J. Ackley and Gail B. Ladwig. It helped me quite a bit.

HTH!

Hey there! Many of the girls in my clinical class bought Nursing Care Plans - Guidelines for Individualizing Patient Care by Marilynn Doenges. It was suggested by a senior nursing student, who said she SWEARS by it.

I've found it to be very helpful so far, as my clinical instructor expects for us as students to only include in our careplans the interventions that we are capable of doing (the independent) and we need to put our rationales. This book includes the independent and collaborative interventions along with rationales for each. There's a CD that came with my book too, but I haven't used it yet, so I couldn't tell you about it...

My clinical instructor was impressed that, by the 2nd week of clinical, there were so many students able to write a careplan! *I'm not going to tell her how easy it was to copy the right stuff out of the book!* :chuckle

I use the Nursing Diagnosis Reference Manual by Sparks & Taylor - has come in VERY handy so far! :)
