Bed rest

It says that after surgery like hip surgeries, people are recommended to be OOB to prevent deep vein thrombosis.

Why would a person be recommended for Bed Rest then?

Bed rest doesn't mean get in and stay in, and don't move. Bed rest means lots and lots of rest, in bed.

Rest is essential for healing from disease and trauma (including surgery). Consider that running around, doing tasks, watching kids, paying bills, etc., etc., takes energy. Healing also takes energy. If you are getting lots of rest, your available energy can be used for healing.

Hope that makes sense.

Sometimes after hip/knee sugery the patient might be on bed rest until the doctor comes to see them or they get evaluated by PT. Then they get out of bed a certain amount of time a day, the rest of the time they are in bed.

Hope this helps.
