The New York Times recently put out a few articles on this topic. If you're interested, click on the links.

My interest is minimal regarding the sheer existence of articles as they tell us what we already know: THERE IS A SHORTAGE OF QUALIFIED NURSES WHICH ONLY CAN INCREASE. Been There Done That :)

My real interest and passion has become brainstorming with others as to how we can help solve this problem. I see that if we, nurses are NOT PART OF THE SOLUTION, WE'RE PART OF THE PROBLEM. ;)

teamrn: I read the article that lilmamita referred to and it is not just an "oh my god, what are we going to do" article. It states that patients who were cared for by RN's more that assistive personnel received less infection, went home sooner. We are all helping with the nursing shortage because we are busting our butt in nursing school!! The solution that many have came up with for the nursing shortage is to hire more assistive personnel to make up for the lack of RN's and this article explained that may not be such a good idea.
