Does anyone have any experience working in group homes with the developmentally disabled and mentally ill? What is it like? What can you expect? What is the typical salary range? What is the amount of on call responsibility? Thank you!!

I have worked at a couple of group homes, not as a nurse, but as a direct care staff member many years ago. I worked the midnight shift and basically functioned as an uncertified nursing aide giving showers, feedings, grooming, getting people up and dressed, completing flow sheets, and reporting changes in condition.

My friend works as an RN at for a family-owned company that operates a small chain of group homes for the developmentally disabled adult populations. She is on call once every six weeks and her duties are mainly clerical. Each client needs an assessment once every 12 months, so she performs them on occasion. Otherwise, she completes paperwork, reviews orders and MARs for errors, audits charts, and does a whole host of random things. Her pay is $36 hourly and she is in Texas.

Thank you for the reply Commuter it was very helpful!
