Working as a GN

Hi, I was wondering if anyone has worked as a GN before taking their boards?

I graduated in March from an RN program. Most of my classmates already got jobs before graduation! I have had a few interviews/job offers as well, but I'm afraid I won't have enough time to study for the NCLEX??? I am also planning on taking a review class at the end of May, and take the test in June...I did not work while in school, and we do need the money...What did YOU do? Any opinions would be greatly appreciated!

Before NCLEX was computerized, it was common to work as a GN prior to taking boards. Our instructors advised that working was the best way to prepare for NCLEX, and I would agree. I don't know of anyone from my class who took a review course, and we had a 95% pass rate.

Good luck!

yes, i worked as a gn as did most of my classmates. it was common during that time for gns to work as gns prior to receiving their rn license. if a gn didn't pass boards, they were able to stay onboard at the hospital working in a nurse assist capacity until they did pass boards. it's great work experience! :)

i wish you well in passing your boards! :)

Not an RN yet, almost a GN...I plan on taking boards in early July and I'm starting my new job the week of July 11th....told my employer in the interview that's what I wanted and they were fine with it...
