What would you recommend?

Hey guys! I have been reding a lot of posts about people ranting about coworkers and working conditions. I find it unfortunate that a lot of the responses are "get out now!!!!" with the job market for nurses being so unstable. Would it make more sense to just make the best of your current situation and try to stand up for yourself when it comes to bosses/coworkers/nurses that "eat their young"? What about unions? Am I being totally naive and missing something?

Btw, it also should be mentioned the way that switching jobs frequently can have a negative effect on benefits/job history/ and credit score.

I agree with you. The "get out now" advice doesn't solve anything. It's just running away from the problem and ultimately you'll run into the same kind of stuff somewhere else. That being said, I did have a job once where I ran away from the problem. It just couldn't be solved and was a poor fit.

I see a lot of negativity on my floor and it can be so discouraging for new grads to witness that. On the other hand, I also think that if someone isn't willing to really work towards a solution or can't offer any good advice, maybe it would be better for her/him and the institution as a whole for him/her to leave.

I think you will find that most of the "get out now" advice is offered around unsafe or questionable hospital/clinic/LTC practices. Most of time this advice is given when said person is put in a position that could impact their license. Conflicts within the workplace are inevitable but manageable for the most part. When faced with occurrences that could involve the BON then the best advice is to get out. Not having a job is better than not having a license.

Earning less pay is better than being fired for something not your fault, being investigated, paying a fine and being under the microscope of "stayed suspension" for probation period of 5 years. yadda yadda..
