Student Nurse needs to interview a Nurse Manager! Please Help!

Nurses General Nursing

Published

Hi all! I'm new to the forums. My name is Meghan and I'm a student nurse at San Jose State University in CA. I'll be graduating in December of this year with my BSN and I am soooo excited. For my leadership/process class this semester I have to interview a nurse manager or leader. If there is anyone on this board who would be willing to help me out by answering these questions about yourself and your career.

If you are willing, and it is easier for you, I am willing to do the interview via telephone. (I'll call you!) Please feel free to post here, or PM me when I have 15 posts on the board.

Thank you in advance!

Here are the questions I need to ask.. the answers can be as brief or as in depth as you like!

N138 Nurse Manager Interview worksheet

Interview a Nurse Manager (not your instructor). Ask these questions:

How did they get where they are? How long in nursing?

Are they where they thought they would be at this stage in their career?

What is their daily job like?

What are their mission, vision and values?

How do they support their nurses?

What type of leadership theory do they value?

How do they lead and implement change on their unit?

What are their goals for the next 5 – 10 years?

Answer all of these questions and then share whether you feel that this person is a good leader or manager and would you work for them? Why? Why not?

n138 nurse manager interview worksheet

interview a nurse manager (not your instructor). ask these questions:

how did they get where they are? i did a good job as a staff nurse and applied for an open manager spot when asked by my boss to do so. how long in nursing? several decades.

are they where they thought they would be at this stage in their career? never really thought about it. it just happened. i'm very informal.

what is their daily job like? fulfilling, frustrating, challenging, low pay.

what are their mission, vision and values? my mission is to keep my nurses happy and not let patients die or suffer, not get sued. i value god and all of his children. my vision is to keep on going as long as i need to and am able and then do the r thing.

how do they support their nurses? i pitch in when they're overloaded, i try to prevent that in the first place, i relieve them for breaks when able, i try to keep supplies stocked, i ask for their input when changes are contemplated, try to let them make their own schedule, join them at work for at least a little while on major holidays, compliment them when appropriate, treat them with firmness and respect when correction is needed.

what type of leadership theory do they value? see above. i don't really know any formal words for this, i just do what i have learned works. get it done, keep the ship afloat. honest, no games.

how do they lead and implement change on their unit? inservices see above.

what are their goals for the next 5 – 10 years? try to provide sufficient staff, get rid of mandatory ot, encourage advanced study and continuing ed, among others.

answer all of these questions and then share whether you feel that this person is a good leader or manager and would you work for them? why? why not?
