Curious as to what schedule your facilities have. From hospitals to ltc's.

We work three 12's for FT. We self schedule and are locked into a shift, either days, nights or swings. Other than having to bid your shift you are free to bid whichever days you wish. Sometimes I'll work 3 in a row and have 4 off, sometimes 2 on 2 off, some nurses do 6 on, 8 off. I love the flexibity of self scheduling. Makes it easy to tailor each week to your outside obligations. We bid based on seniority so the first few bids can be tough if you are at the bottom but you move up quickly and it works really well I could never work a set schedule.

When I did LTC every place I worked did 8 hr shifts and everyone had set days. It sucked that my set days were 3-11 Thurs-Sun 😒, but it rocked that I was still considered full-time with benefits working only 32 hrs/wk. When I worked Med-Surg, we had block scheduling with 12 hr shifts and alternating weekends. Full-time employees would be assigned to one group or another. I liked this set-up because I always knew when my work days would be and I could make plans months ahead of time because I knew exactly what days I'd be working, which holidays my days would fall on, etc. In the ER I work now, theoretically we do self-scheduling with 12 hr shifts. In practice, what we request is rarely actually followed, so it's as if we're just randomly getting scheduled anyway. I hate this set-up the most since it's so difficult to plan anything.
