RN wanting to change office after 20 years

Nurses General Nursing

Published

Hi, I am a nursing student, but this question isn't about me, its about my mom. She has been a nurse for 25 years and has worked at the same Orthopedics office for 22 years or so. The office has grown significantly and has become more of a business. She no longer gets breaks when she needs them, shes a diabetic so that's not acceptable. She has changed so much in the past 4 years because of this change in management and increase in patients. they are not properly staffed, and that's not for a lack of resources to hire more people. She is so stressed she has started having heart issues to the point where her endocrinologist has told her she needs to leave her office and go somewhere less hectic. She has an associates, can't work in a hospital but doesn't know if she wants to continue in orthopedics. I believe she is willing to take a certificate course for things like school nursing , but not going back to school to get a BSN or anything that would take a year to complete.

Does anyone have any suggestions?, I'm so worried about her :(

Sorry to hear about your mom. There are always opportunities but it depends on her area, experience, and interests. If she wants to come on here for some brainstorming, I'm sure there'd be people able to give advice.

Specializes in Hospice.

It's hard changing jobs after so many years and especially with an associates degree, however, I recently did the same. I left acute care after 18 years and went to hospice, I have an associates degree also. The manager was impressed that I had not been a job hopper and actually matched my annual salary. Experience still does account for something. Good luck to your mom.
