Nurses General Nursing

Hi, I just got my acceptance letter for nursing school for the LPN program in North Carolina.

But I found out a week ago, due to family issuse, I would have to move to Nevada around August/September next year, 2011. The program only takes a year, so I should be able to graduate before I move.

-Should I complete the program and move to Nevada and obtain my license? (if the state allows me to do this)

-Should I complete the program, obtain my license in North Carolina and then transfer them to Nevada?

-or should I wait a year, apply for nursing school in Nevada and start from there?

These are the only options I can think of, so if theres any other that would be great.

Thank you for your time

Definitely don't wait another year to start nursing school. You are not moving for another year in any case, might as well use it productively.

Transferring your license shouldn't be that difficult, once you pass the NCLEX in North Carolina. The only issue is how long it will take for you to get your approval to test once you finish the program, and if that will be before or after your move. Most states will allow you to take the test in their state if you are a graduate of an approved program in another state, but you'd have to check individually with your state's BON to see if they approve your program.

If you can complete the program that you have been accepted to without additional stress from what ever is happening in Nevada, then do it. You are already there. It is my understanding that you can graduate there and then take boards in Nevada but you should check with the school to make sure. If you think that there is any way that you will have to quit this nursing program before you graduate, then wait until you get to Nevada to start school.

Nevada is relatively quick in issuing licenses by endorsement. Once you apply and your NC license is verified, you will be issued a temporary license that will be valid until your permanent license is issued (after the criminal record check, etc.). You will need two fingerprint cards to send in with the application for permanent license. Not sure where you are going to be living in Nevada, but if you are in Las Vegas the police department will do these for you for about $5.

Don't wait to start and congratulations.

The NCLEX is a national exam (National Council Licensure Examination) so you can actually test in any state. Where you get your license depends on which state BON you apply to. I graduated from a BSN program in SC, took the NCLEX in Virginia, and am licensed in SC cause that's the BON I applied to. Your school should be able to help you with getting information on the application process for licensing in any state.

Good luck!
