My patient made my night

I wasn't having the best of nights last night. The work and pt load itself was fine, but had found out at the beginning of the shift that one of my co-workers was placed in the SICU yesterday and vented (she had previously been on the floor). Then to find out that her sons are going to take her off the vent today, and we all know, she's not going to make it :crying2: Needless to say, we were all upset, but trying to keep our game faces on.

Five o'clock this morning, I'm getting my pt ready for dialysis, and I have to check her sugar.

Her: Why do you always have to torture me like this? (she's half joking)

Me: Well, you know I get paid extra to do this (my usual come back line for any complaint involving poking pts w/ needles, but my heart just wasn't in it)

Her: I'm gonna have to talk to someone about you getting a pay cut.

She had me laughing so hard, finally not sad tears flowing from my eyes.

So sorry to hear that your co-worker is in such a bad state. It's really difficult to try and focus on your job. I learned at work that my young next-door neighbor was killed in a wreck - it really made the day tough. Lean on each other - don't be afraid to talk about it and talk about the good times you've had together.

So happy a patient was able to ease your mind for a moment. Sorry to hear about your friend/co-worker, I can only imagine how hard that must be. Stay strong, my thoughts & prayers are with you and your friend.
