How does the NCLEX score?

Nurses General Nursing

Published

I'm far from taking it. I'm a CNA student finishing up my last few weeks. Barely starting clinicals today!

Anywho, I did apply for the nursing program & waiting for letter in November.

I have read people say that the NCLEX shuts off at about 75Q or 120Q etc.

What exactly does that mean?

What does it mean if it shuts off at less questions? Or more questions?

Why does it shut off after an amount of questions?

Is there a timer on NCLEX?

When taking NCLEX, does the facility you signed up to test at, provide scratch sheet? Specifically for pharmacology or any other medical math?

If there's anything else I'm missing, please let me know! I'd like all questions answered.

Also, if you recommend any good services that'll help me prepare for it, that'd be great

I'm not that great in science, I have a very difficult time but eventually, I understand it. I sometimes have to literally draw it out

I have read people say that the NCLEX shuts off at about 75Q or 120Q etc.

For the NCLEX-PN, the minimum amount of questions you can get is 85, for NCLEX-RN its 75. The max amount of questions you can get for the PN exam is 205 and for the RN it is 265

What exactly does that mean?

What it means is that between those numbers, the computer will be able to decide if you are at or above the passing level (you pass the test) or below the passing level (you fail the test) and the shut off ending your exam. You can pass or fail at any number 75-265 for RN and 85-205 for LPN. Usually if you get the minimum amount you did very well or very poorly. But the majority do very well.

What does it mean if it shuts off at less questions? Or more questions?

It is not possible to have a test that has less than 85 questions for LPN or more than 205 for LPN

It is not possible to have a test that has less than 75 questions for RN or more than 265 for RN

Why does it shut off after an amount of questions?

It shuts off because the computer has been able to figure out if you are passing or not.

Is there a timer on NCLEX?

Yes, the test is timed. The LPN exam has a max time limit of 5 hrs and the RN exam has a max time limit of 6 hrs

When taking NCLEX, does the facility you signed up to test at, provide scratch sheet?

You get a white board you can use. Once you fill it up (you cannot erase anything) you raise your hand and they will get you a fresh white board to use.

You can write anything you want on it. But you CANNOT write anything until you start your actual test. you cannot 'brain dump' before or during the tutorial that is shown before your test begins.

A lot of your questions and any others you may have can be found here.
