For fun - My dream nursing job....

Nurses General Nursing

Published

Specializes in Telemetry.

My dream nursing job would be one that had the following qualifications:

1) I'd work from 7 - 4 or 8 - 5, 5 days a week or I'd work 4 10hr shifts in a row. Whichever, I'd get off by 6pm every day.

2) I'd get to spend the time necessary with each patient and really be able to concentrate on their diagnosis, what their needs are, and how I can meet both.

3) Where doctor's understand that they are a part of a TEAM and discuss the care of my patients with me, not order me around like a dog.

4) There would be no paper charting. All charting would consist mostly of check boxes that I could click on with my mouse.

5) If I started to feel overwhelmed by my patient load my charge nurse would know (through ESP of course) that I needed help, and with out me asking or having to tell him/her what I need she would do it. (This is a DREAM job folks. :))

6) My PCAs would be just as concerned as I was about my patients. They would be able to critically think about what was happening with our patients and do more than one thing at a time (ie get a blanket for patient while they are getting some towels for another.) They would also not whisper behind my back that they think I'm not helping them when I'm sitting at the computer. (Charting still has to be done at some point and no I'm not being lazy.)

7) Everyone would try to actually work together as a team and take responsibility for what needs to be done instead of me feeling like I have to check up on everyone to make sure they are doing what is best for the patient; not what is best (most of the time easiest and quickest) for themselves (this includes doctors.)

-sigh- what a wonderful world it would be. :yeah:

What would make your job wonderful? Any suggestions?

PS for those of you who would flame me because of my stent about PCAs please realize that I know not all PCAs are like this AND that I was a PCA for 2 years before becoming a nurse. I'm just a bit frustrated with the PCAs that I work with.

we can all dream, can't we? that would be great!
