Facilities that let patients rule the unit

Does anyone work in a place where the patients seem to rule the roost?

I'm mainly talking about patients that pick and choose among LTC staff (these are 90% not valid reasons) and the drama it causes.

On my unit we have at least 4 patients who have a list of 4 or more aides/LVNS they won't accept to care for them.

I know that is their right- but when does it stop? Sometimes the group of aides assigned to my unit- it will turn out NONE of them are allowed to work with a specific patient.

I blame a large part of this on my UM.

Anytime a patient has a grievance with a staff, the first thing she says is "Do you want me to disallow them to work with you?"

OF COURSE they say yes. It's the first solution she gives!

Thoughts?

In this era of patient satisfaction in which they are treated as 'customers,' the sense of entitlement does not surprise me. After all, the 'customer' is always right, even if he's rejected every single member of nursing staff available.
