Are you dissatisfied in being a nurse? Why?

Nurses General Nursing

Published

The nursing shortage is real and we are already feeling the effects of it. I am writing a paper for my class on my way to getting a BSN. :nurse: I need some ideas on why nurses are dissatisfied in our field. (examples: poor management, no voice, high pt to nurse ratio)///////// Please respond and post your biggest dissatisfaction, or what you've been hearing. And, what, if anything would make you stay in your current position? :smokin:

Oh man ... dont get me started.... too late....

Get your pen ready... im about to write your paper for you.

We are required to know whats happening in the E.R. waiting room while caring for the patients in our direct care.

2. http://www.ktla.com/news/landing/ktla-hospital-crash,0,6359471.story We are required to know whats happening in the parking lot and attend to a CAR CRASH all the while abandoning our patients in the EMERGENCY room... and no mater what your choice here, you stand to get thrown in jail .... damned if you do ... damned if you dont.. No where do they blame the man for not calling 911 after realizing he needed EMERGENCY CARE

3. We get arrested for not drawing blood http://ingunowners.com/forums/general_political_discussion/53744-nurse_arrested_because_she_would_not_draw_blood_without_consent.html

4. We get Sexually assaulted and have to smile about it. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/08/11/utah-man-sentenced-for-gr_n_678697.html

5. Where else can you die at work while trying to help people.

6. We got shot at for trying to save the life of a shooting victim.

7. I have just been fired from my job because I felt it unsafe to take care of patients assigned to me.... Now Im being told they might send me to the state board for abandonment even though the only contact I had with my patients was receiving report on 2 of 5 before I went to the Nursing office and said I could not do this. They claimed that by listening to the report of 2 patients I accepted the care and thus abandoned my patients when I left the hospital 5 mins after telling them this was an unsafe assignment and they asked me to return (thus accepting the patients) until they could work it out. (NO... Im not worried about going to state... just think its ******** that I have to go at all)

8. The hospital I worked at decided it would cut costs by removing CNA's and Ward Clerks from the floor... thus forcing me to do the job of 3 people so they could get a bonus at Christmas for cutting costs.

9. We get suspended for OFFERING.. not FORCING... to pray with family

10. We get tossed in jail for not being doctors. (Nurse malpractice suite for mis diagnosis of a blood clot.. thinking the patient who was drunk at the time was not just drunk) (I ask you when did nurses start becoming doctors without the benefit of CT's and X rays, blood work etc. )

11. Drunk Urinates on you because he thinks its funny... and I have to take it like a .... Nurse.... (Happened to me) ..... because the man was drunk..... He cant rape me because he is drunk... but its okay to pee on me...

12. Suite for Neglect because parents were Idiots and waited to long... they claim a 5 hour wait in a E.R. waiting room was long enough for bacteria to incubate to the point of EATING LIMBS.... I love how ignorant people can become rich from the court because of ignorant people sitting in the jury box.

13. We as nurses know we are sexually harassed by our patients... but do a search on "patient fondles nurse lawsuit" and note how no results come of about the nurse being assaulted... but everyone and their mother has one for the Nurse sexually assaulting the patient. Even though its our REQUIREMENT to examine the patient head to toe, moving body parts to check for wounds caused by bacteria or fungus (under the breast, in the abdominal folds in the peritoneal area, in the gluteal folds)

14. I went to put a IV in a patient who came to the E.R. because of a fever. She started dogin at me as I setup for the I.V. of how bad my hospital is at starting IV. She asked if I had any experience I told her I have been doing this for 2 years now.... she looked at me and SCREAMED You don't know what your doing ... you just started this.... I responded "Mam, I place about 20 IV's a day, I work 3 to 4 days a week, 14-16 days a month, 168 days a year... in the last two years I've paced approx. 6500 catheters in people" then I asked.... How many have you put in ???? I think I know what im doing... but your welcome to go with someone else if you like... we all do about the same amount. She then allowed me to stick her.... I got it in one try... she then said... OMG from now on when I come here im going to make damn sure you put in my IV.

MY POINT.... We get yelled at by just about everyone for their fears and we get sued for their ignorance.

I could go on and on....

Truth is, we put our lives, reputations, sanity, and personal wealth on the line every day we walk in to take care of patients... and what do you get for it... pressure, stress, anxiety, bankruptcy and in some cases 5 to 10 years behind bars for doing our jobs.

Hey... anyone know of any LVN job openings at an ER in the USA :-) I want a job. :coollook: Seriously... im out of work right now.

Some people think about enriching their lives... others about defining their lives..... don't be the latter.... Its all in how you look at things..

An aspect i find dissatisfying is the lack of time we get with patients. i am very big on the holistic aspect of healing, and with the short window of time we get with patients, it's very hard to assess other factors in their lives that could be affecting their health. i don't like that kind of job security :)

good luck with your paper!

angie

1. Upper management RN's that have lost all realistic aspects of nursing and have forgot what a nurse is and what it's about.

2. short staffing, unsafe patient care ratio and with upper management with their unrealistic expectations

3. FAMILIES that have no respect what so ever when you put 100% into pleasing them and making their stay at the hospital more pleasant..

4. did i mention short staffing and unrealistic expectations from upper management..

5. Hiring freezes? Seriously I have no respect for a hospital that is so short staffed on nurses and CNA's where there is 400 beds and only two cnas, one secretary and about 10 patients per an RN/LPN at night. I believe hospitals have forgotten our acute care patients are sicker than what they use to be.

6. ICU overflow on floors with short staffing? I hate having cardiac drips and insulin drips on my floor, this is VERY unsafe when a RN/LPN share this patient and have 9 other patients to care for, admissions, playing secretary and CNA at the same time. and I've seen it happen more times than I care for.

Passive-aggressive nurse managers with no business world experience, think that their BSN or MSN qualifies them to make real world decisions, LOL!!!
