self scheduling.... figure out what has to be covered and how many each person has to pick up and let them decide. explain it has to be fair and if there is an issue then they will be scheduled without any choices. my experience is it works out well. and the staff is less resistant.

Get it in writing, what is on call pay, if you are called in, are you expected to work your next regularly scheduled shift, if you are called in, then work your regularly scheduled shift will you get extra pay after X amount of hours. Does your hospital or state have a policy about how many hours a nurse can work? How quickly after being called in are you expected to arrive, will nurses who live farther away have an issue with the time? Does the pay start from when you get the call, i.e, travel time, or when you show up at the door. Will all employees take turns being on call. How long after new employees are hired will they be expected to take call, i.e, have the experience to handle emergencies. (Make sure new empolyees know they will be expected to take call, it may help if their first few call rotations they are buddied with an experienced nurse.)
