Gastric Washings

Help!

I need to do a gastric washing on a ten month old and I have never done it before! Was told by the off going shift to... look at the policy and procedure manual. I am still not sure I got it. Any suggestions?

Haven't heard the term gastric washings before, but is it the same as gastric lavage? If it's similar to gastric lavage then basically all that is is instilling sterile water into the stomach via a NG/OG tube and then pulling the water right back out. In babies/preemies we use about 5cc's.

YES,

Both are much the same, I had to insert NGT instill 20 cc sterile h2o and take it back out to get the respiratory secretions for AFB. Thanks!

BTW had to do it 3 days in a row, kid had to be NPO for 5 hours prior.

I think gastric lavage , suction and washing the same procdure.

but if differents in the purpose .
