I am gonna to go back to college (I have a 4 yr business degree)
I am trying to decide what schools I want to attend
ADN or BSN is the questioon...I ultimately want to become a nursing educator at a college/university
Most accerlated BSN schools want a 3.0 gpa or higher and I dont have that
I looked into GA Perimeter for the ADN program
Athens Tech has an ADN program
If anyone can give me some advice/assistance I appreciate it
I just graduated college a yr ago and entered the awful field of IT and I want to persue a people oriented profession assisting people
I would like to move to the ATL area or somewhere close by

Hey!
Have you checked out Emory? (if you've been to school already, then you'd be in the BSN 2nd degree program) Since you want to teach, I believe that they have a PhD program that you could go through eventually. And if the money part scares you, they have TONS of scholarships where if you work for them (I know that the Emory Hospital and Children's Healthcare of Atlanta - the pediatric hospital side of Emory - have programs like this (~$16,000 a year in return for 18 months of service), and they have the same type of thing where they'll help pay if you teach for them...
As for the GPA, Emory is actually pretty essay-dominant (meaning if you are a borderline 3.0, the essay would hold more weight than the GPA, I've heard of people w/upper 2.x GPAs getting in on a good essay...)
I applied there for the BSN program in Fall 2006, so I'll be sitting here crossing my fingers...
Take care!

If you want to teach, you'll have more grad school options if you get the BSN. Since you have a bachelor's degree, look into programs that can give you an accelerated BSN.
So do you have a degree already or will the BSN be your firdt degree? Were the pre reqs hard? Im 24 and havent started the pre reqs. I think I need mostly the Science pre reqs. I work in the IT field now which is what my degree is in
For me, it's the first degree...as for the science pre-reqs, I thought that Intro Chem was pretty straight-forward, then I had to take a Chem class w/an organic component - as long as I studied, I was fine (B+ in that one); for me, Microbiology lecture was my lowest grade, as I had a bad teacher at the time, but I got an A in the laboratory part of the class. Anatomy and Physiology I/II is a lot of material, but as long as you review your notes every day, that will help it to sink in - and I'm a visual learner, so being in lab a lot helped tons, so I'd go in after lab and review the labs for the week (A- in the class).
Hope that helps some - feel free to PM me if you want more info!

Hi,
I wish I could help you with a good advice, but the truth of the matter is that the admissions to the nursing programs have become very competetive. Although most schools require a minimum of 3.0 GPA, the truth is that you need a much higher GPA to get into the program. From what I have heard, if your GPA is not that great but if you have good grades for sciences, Emory is your best bet.
Some of the schools that offer a nursing program in the area:
Georgia State University (BSN)
Georgia Baptist (Mercer University) (BSN)
Georgia Perimiter (ADN)
Clayton State University (BSN)
Brenau College (BSN)
Kennesaw State University (BSN)
Emory University (BSN)
Good luck!

Ditto - this is critical. In an earlier post, I did say that Emory would take people with an upper 2.x GPA and I guess I forgot to mention that it's IF you have good grades for the science pre-reqs... so since I believe that you said that you only had to take the sciences (have you taken statistics or human growth/development yet - just thought of those as being a pre-req for Emory), so this would be a good opportunity to get your GPA closer to/above a 3.0...and depending on your situation, you could add a few more classes in there, 'cause most schools put more emphasis on the most recent GPA (someone can correct me if I'm wrong...:uhoh21: )

I also have a previous BA, currently I'm in the last semester of a BSN program at Clayton State. My cumulative GPA just under 3.0, but my nursing pre-req GPA was over 3.5. I hope that you'll consider BSN programs over ADN in the Atlanta area because most of them will take you the same amount of time to complete at the ADN programs (4 semesters). I applied to almost every school in the area that I could commute to (Emory, GA State, Clayton State, Brenau, Kennesaw State, and GA Perimeter [as a backup since its an ADN program). I didn't apply to GA Baptist at Mercer because it was a 6 semester program even for those with a previous college degree. I have heard great things about North Georgia College & State University, but you must go through their ADN first, then their RN to BSN (I think), which would take 6 semesters to do.
I was accepted to Georgia Perimeter, Emory, Brenau, and Clayton State. Kennesaw and GA State may be heavier on the overall GPA than those other schools were. I decided to go to Clayton State because the in-state tuition is so much cheaper than Emory, even with the CHANCE scholarship that I was offered there.
I wish you the best in your application to nursing school. It is amazing how fast I've made it through...even though from where you're standing the end of nursing schools seems far away, it really isn't.
