I knew that this was my path in life at the age of 11 when I was deeply influenced by the hospital volunteers when I had an eye correction. To the days in the hospital leading up to my surgery, I seemed to be everybody's pet from the volunteer department. When I came out of it, there stood Mr. Doodles with a single red carnation and a smile. That was then when I realized that this was where God wanted me to be. But now that I have spinal arthuritis, I will be very limited to going back to work and may even have to vhange to another career bcuz of my back.:flowersfo

I too have back issues..even though I am young..and I often think that maybe i shouldnt change over into nursing

My causes are as follows.. 2 car accidents that left 12 vrtibrea outta place in the 1990's, carrying of a child, lifting and rolling of patients that agrivated it and ffrom moving alot in florida and here to georgia.

I will be a second career nurse. I have a degree in athletic training that I never used but have worked in the biotech field for nearly 7 years - and have done very well in it. But I have wanted to go to nursing for quite some time. I took A & P in college but unfortunately that was 11 years ago (sad because I aced the courses), so I have to start over again with those classes, along with micro and then I can start applying.

It is hard going back the second time around but I think it will be worth it. I am hoping to eventually become a midwife so I have a while to go!

Nurseguy -

I understand being confused and not sure of what path to take. I received my first undergraduate degree in 1997. I did take A&P I and II and micro for my first degree, but because it was so long ago I needed to retake for nursing pre-req. I have always wanted to be a nurse, but somewhere along the way in college the first time I became sidetracked and ended up not pursuing. For the past 9 years I have thought about going back to school as I entered corporate america in 1997 working in Human Resources. Sitting behind a desk all day does not work for me. I spent so many years thinking about how long it would take that I wasted so much time. I started taking nursing pre-reqs in Sept. of 2005 and as of last month I received my acceptance letter to GA Baptist College of Nursing at Mercer University. The time has flown by!! What a fool I was earlier in life. I am working full-time in an office - took a big pay cut to find a new job with flexibility to let me take classes for my pre-reqs - and I took on class a semester. I am currently taking Micro in summer session and will start nursing school Aug. 21st!! I cannot believe it is finally here. Now as long as I haven't gotten in over my head I should be fine.

I guess what I am trying to say in a really long and drawn out way is that life is too short. Anything that is worth having takes work and time. We live in such an instant gratification society we forget that success does not occur overnight. It is something that is earned through hard work and sacrafice. Nursing school is too expensive and time consuming if it is not something you feel you are called to do in life. Something I found very helpful was hiring a career coach a few years ago. I always had this nagging feeling I should be a nurse after college and I just could not get it out of my head. So I went to this career coach and she gave me all kinds of career tests, skills tests, etc. My top 3 jobs that came up time and time again were the three jobs I had always thought of pursuing - nursing, veterinary medicine and forestry. So for me personally it was very affirming for me to see the actual results on paper - that way I knew I wasn't crazy and I was actually right on track all these years, I just needed to do something about it!!

So needless to say here I am. I hope that helps.

Hello Nurseguy,

I am a hospital pharmacy/iv technician and have been doing this for the past 18 years. A career in Nursing has always been in the picture but never got the chance to pursue until last year. Fortunately, I got through with all my pre-req's this past spring semester and currently on the waiting list at my school for fall 2006.

Good luck to you in whatever path you take.
