I love ob nursing. I currently work on a busy ante/postpartum unit and I love it. However, I moved across the country for this job and I hate the area. I've gave it a chance and 8 months later I still hate it. I am applying in my home state and I'm having a hard time. I have ACLS and intro and intermediate fetal monitoring. I'm a part of AWHONN. I dont know what else to do. I'm considering giving up my job and working med/surg just to be back but i think i would be miserable doing that. Any suggestions? No one is even hiring OB. Do I just send my resume anyway and hope. Do I call the supervisors and introduce myself? I dont want to be annoying but I dont want to be passive either.

You say you work antepartum/postpartum. Could you cross-train where you are to L&D? Maybe learn to circulate and scrub. Take the advance fetal monitor class. Even cross train to newborn could make you more marketable. Everything you do to enhance your abilities makes you a better choice for the next employer. Consider becoming certified in your specialty. And maybe you need to be more flexible on what hours you will work. Good luck

Go ahead and send resumes to HR, but do not call the managers directly. I find that annoying and there simply isn't anything I can do if there are no jobs available. All I would be able to tell you is to send your resume to HR. I have been getting a lot of phone calls lately from nurses who want to relocate and need a job. I have no positions available and a line 6 deep of current employees that want to move up to full time, so even if I did have position opened up, I wouldn't necessarily look outside to fill them. Get a good resume and talk to the nurse recruiter at the facilities and make a good impression there. When something becomes available they do forward their "notes" along (at least where I work).

It is tough out there to find something. Don't give up. Something will find you. Good luck.
