Frustrated with N.O. hospitals

Published

I'll be graduating in May and I've applied at Ochsner, Children's, and Tulane. I'm trying to get a position in either mother/baby, nursery, or NICU. Ochsner literally told me that any position in those fields would be filled internally and I would only be hired if I went into med/surg or telemetry. Haven't heard anything from children's or tulane yet, but tulane says my application has been sent to the unit manager. I just feel a little lost, because I thought this process would be A LOT easier and FASTER considering you hear SO much about how desperate hospitals are for nurses.

I have one year of experience as an extern in the nursery, so that should count for something.

I'm just frustrated... am I really going to have to do a year of med/surg?!?!?!

I Have Heard The New Grads Have To Do Med/surg Or Telemetry Before Going On One Of The Units You Want. But I Have Also Heard That They R Making Alot Of Exceptions Lately. Keep Trying

Yeah i'll keep trying, because I really would have a hard time if I had to go into med/surg. It would be pointless for me, because I would loose so many of my neonatal skills. :uhoh21:

What area are all of you looking to work? :nurse:

Unfortunately, the specialties you are interested in are fairly popular. You may get lucky and apply at the right time, but despite the general shortage of nurses in the area, those particular jobs are not easy to come by. Good luck, though. (I have some good friends who works NICU at Ochsner, and they are often short hours or have to pick up hours on a different floor to make full time)

What happened was that the majority of graduates (may) secured their jobs/positions at least a month ago- or earlier. Many of us teched at the location where we wanted to work- thereby securing our spots... I don't understand how a city that is experiencing a nursing shortage has no day shifts left--- I just don't understand....last I heard: EJ had day shifts open in ortho, and oschner had day open in oncology and med surg.... everything else has been filled.

good luck

oh, a year of med surge/tele is good for ya :). be a trooper!
