Hello,
I am currently doing a utilization review position that is work from home. It's been a blessing for the last couple years, but I NEED a change. Previous experience was medsurg and inpt case management. There is a great need in my area currently for school nurses and I have been contemplating a change. I don't have any specific peds experience, but I do have a child... LOL. It would be a decrease in pay, but also have a decrease in child care costs and less expensive benefits. I also realize that things are much harder right now due to Covid. Soooo, for those who are currently school nurses, would you recommend it? Should I run in a different direction? Plow full speed ahead? Any topics in particular to study up on? Certifications that would be helpful?
I would be looking at the 2022-23 school year, as I am completing my BSN right now, which is required in my area. Thinking also of seeing about a shadow day to make sure its something I would like. Not sure why, but this specialty is pulling at me.

I would definitely shadow for a few days if you can do that. Also get yourself on a sub list. It is a complex, difficult job on any given day.
Think type 1 and type 2 diabetics. Diabetics with CGM's and insulin pumps. Think medically complex children with Mic-key tubes and tube feedings. Think about multiple children in the building having anaphylaxis diagnosis. Think seizures and how they present. Think uncontrolled asthma. Think about being the only medical person in a building full of people.
Good luck and let us know how you make out!
Thank you! I can see how it would be very complex and even intimidating. That’s a great list of dx to start with. I think I’ll reach out and see if the local system has a shadow program.
