I have a question about my personal experience. I hope you don't mind us students lurking over here too much.
I had a c-section a little over a year ago and when the doctor was closing, she asked "Is her foley draining?" and the nurse gasped. She forgot that step. I asked her later if she would get in trouble for that, she told me all the nurses had done it at one point, but it was the first time for her, so she said they would all be ragging on her.
I was just wondering how often this happens and what the consequences are? Thanks in advance!

Hmmm.... I just think the pt would pee on themselves hehe. Now if the foley was clamped off at the thigh or something thats a whole other story.
Also, IDK where you are in your studies but if a full bladder can interfere with the involution of the uterus
sorry, I was trying to write a reply with while a toddler was trying to crawl up on my lap. Yes, a foley keeps the bladder continuously drained. If you were to forget to put it in , perhaps it would be difficult to urinate depending on how "traumatic" the c-sect was. Please don't worry about being a student and posting, thats how we all learn. I am a recent graduate and I completely understand where you are coming from.
Good Luck

If it was a pt. with a SCI that a full bladder could lead to autonomic dysreflexia and could result in an emergency. The Clinical manifestations of A.D. is hypertension, low pulse, flushed face, pale lower extremities, and etc. First thing the nurse would need to check is if the bladder is full or if there is fecal impaction.
I'm sorry for rambling... Can you tell I have a exam in two weeks ?

With a full bladder during a c/s there is much greater risk of cutting into the bladder while cutting through the layers to expose the uterus. I was recently in a c/s where the foley was not draining. We could not figure out why, it was in the right place and the doc claimed it was the new foleys our hospital bought and that she had had several c/s where this had occurred with this brand of foley. She had a very difficult time getting to baby due to the full bladder and she was very careful not to cut the bladder when going through the layers.
