Hello, I am in my first year of nursing school in Texas. I am from South Korea and I have been studying in U.S for 7 years. I changed my major to nursing a year ago and caught up all the required courses, got in to nursing school and my first clinical start in one week!
I went to a hospital orientation last week and luckily, our instructor assigned us to perform a bed bath to an elder patient. I only got to learn that once last semester, but was pretty familiar with the procedure since I nailed the tutorial video the night before, assuming that I probably would get tested.
Thanks to the video, I wasn't that bad, however, what actually gave me a big ass anxiety was that when I encountered my very first patient, my mouth was completely shut by this invisible languge barrier crap that didn't really showed up during my 7 year of study abroad in this country!!!!!!
I was so disappointed at myself. It was just totally different class of language and I am now very worried this is going to make me look like a dumb!!! For example, when I was about to wipe her abdomen, all I could say was, "I am going to clean your abdomen now." So were for her extremities! "I am going to clean your arm now."
How awful and repeated sentence is that for an elder patient who deserves more friendly nurse who can comfort her physically and mentally? I don't know if all of native english speakers face the same problem similiar to mine, but I am so devastated by this incidence. I do not look professional at all!!!!!!!
Please share with me.. or help me!!!!!
