Foot care training

Nurses Entrepreneurs

I have been interested in starting a foot care service for some time now and after reading posts from LoisJean feel this is something I can do. I would like to start out by receiving some kind of training but cannot find anyone who provides this type of course.

I have been in touch with LoisJean who has given me wonderful information about becoming an independent provider performing foot/nail care however I would like to take a course of some description to make myself more prefessional. I found a course titled "Foot & Nail care for Nurses" which sounds absolutely perfect but it is Wisconsin and I live in New York, I cannot find anything else closer to home.

If anyone has crossed this bridge already and can offer any advice I would be extremely grateful.

About 7-8 years ago a woman (one of the original pioneers of foot care nursing in the US) named Jane Kelly started an association called F.N.A.N.A. FOOT NURSE ASSOCIATION OF NORTH AMERICA. (pronounced fananna) Her husband was very ill and she was nearing retirement so she passed the presidency of this association on to two nurses in Arizona. The association has been in a sort of suspended animation for the past 2 years. These nurses have been so busy with their own business that they have had little time to deal with the association. I think there are about 35 members.

I will be meeting with these nurses in August, when I move my daughter to Tuscon to go to college. We will discuss reviving the association. I believe starting a real association is sort of a big deal, lots of red tape, and since it has already be done, it would be a shame to have to go thru all that again if we do not have to.

I will be taking this information back to the foot and nail exam committee when we meet again in Kansas City MO. in October. We all know that an association is needed and if this one is no longer active, then the committee will be dealing with starting one. The WOCNCB is well connected and will know how to properly do this. So I would advice you to hang in there until October and see what happens after this meeting. There is a benefactor of sorts, who may be donating resources for this.

We will also be discussing a website devoted strictly to foot care nurse where nurses can freely discuss anything on their mind, including who they are, what their business are, and how their business might help others who need their services.

So there will be a lot of news regarding the future of foot care nursing in late October. There will also be discussions of mass trainings for foot care nurses. It is too premature to say anything more about the trainings. I will let you all know, when I know. Hang in there!

I think I have sucessfully uploaded the only form I have on WORD that might be useful. I have not used it, but after looking at it again, may consider adding it to my charting. Hope it helps.

Summers,

I'm not sure where the closest course might be to you. I'm in washington state and would have loved to just have been able to make a run up to Vancouver, CA. I ended up in Ontario however, and that is where I found Anne Nelson. I think I know her e-mail address, but before I post it, I think I will just double check it first. I do know that canada has many different courses for nurses to take, so you would think we could find one closer to you. Anne might even be able to point you in the right direction. Also, I'm sure you have read Laura's posts about the upcoming certification course in the U.S. So far this is the only one I have heard of in the U.S.

Just to let everyone know, I have e-mailed what I believe to be Anne Nelson's and am waiting for a response. I will post again when I hear from her.

Has anyone done a search for courses in canada? I've done many searches, and it seems like I get results for canada, but it seems like they are all around the Ontario area. I will try again and see what I come up with.

Hi, All.....glad to see interest in foot care is growing. I just returned from a two part course in Abbotsford, British Columbia....near Vancouver. The course was taught by Susan Tremble, a very professional foot care expert nurse. There is a basic two day program and then a three day advanced program. The program was offered through University College of Fraser Valley (can be found through a Google search). The three day course has an exam and clinical observation. The material is extensive and you feel very confident after completion.

I live in Bucks County, PA. If there are any foot care RN's in my area, I would love to hear from you.

Check the WOCN website for for updates on the Certification exam to be available next year.

Cheers,

Eileen
