fnp or whnp

Published

Hi please I need your help in deciding on what to study. I currently work as an er nurse for 3 yrs and about to pursue my masters in fnp this fall but I really love women's health and now I can't decide whether to go for whnp or stick with fnp. Am mostly afraid of the job market when it comes to whnp . But my question is if I become an fnp can I stil work in a women's health clinic or facility? Pls kindly let me know thank you

As a FNP, yes, you can still work in women's health. Just know since you were not specialized in women's health your knowledge base will be a bit rusty. I went to a GYN appointment and my provider was a FNP; I could tell she lacked knowledge in that area - she was also brand new as a NP. But of course, you're going to learn on the job with exposure.

You could always go for your FNP (to be more marketable) then get your post-masters in WHNP if you're worried about finding employment. But, if WHNP if what you really really desire and have NO wish to work elsewhere ever, do WHNP.

thank you so much for responding i hve been praying that someone responds back. so i wil do fnp and during my obgyn rotations if i see that i love it that much willl consider a post graduate degree. thank you again i really appreciate it;)

It really just depends on the area you live and work. I am an OB nurse with 5 years experience and women's health is definitely my niche. I am from a more rural area, and WHNP jobs are hard to come by. So I am doing an FNP program right now so I will have more options in the event that I cannot find a women's health position right away. You can definitely land jobs with the FNP behind your name.

I would look at the curriculum for both programs. If you want/feel drawn to one area why settle for something else? Also, some programs offer dual degrees or post graduation speciality training.
