FNP student who wants to change units

Published

Specializes in Adult-Gerontology Nurse Practitioner.

Hello everyone. I'm a 2nd year FNP student at Ball state university online program, I'm having a dilemma. I have med/surge experience in the past about 2 years worth and I currently work OB (L&D, ante and postpartum, nursery the whole shebang) well I'm getting tired and bored with OB. I wan something new and I also feel that being in OB currently while doing FNP isn't beneficial to my learning. I know this may sound crazy but I kinda miss med surg. I've been doing OB now for 4 years and I feel like all that med surg knowledge is gone. I want it back and I think it will help me in the Long run. I want med surge style patients but don't want the stress and high nurse pt ratio of the unit. What other type units do you suggest I try to work so I can obtain my medical knowledge again. If I wanted to be an midwife this unit would be great but I feel I'm limiting myself. I'm also scared to go back to med surge because I'm rusty and don't want to feel like an idiot.

Than you for all your responses and support.

Specializes in ICU.

Do med/surge icu. You will learn a lot. You will be busy, but not because you have so many pts but because you need to manage a sick pt that could instantly die if you slack off. You will learn more about management of diseases which will be helpful in your NP role.

Specializes in ER.

How do you like the program so far? How long is it going to take to complete? How long did you wait to get into the program? What was your GPA?
