FNP: Passed boards, now what?

Published

Can anyone tell me the process that takes place after boards? I know the first step is applying for state license. I am in Illinois and do not have a job yet. There seems to be some confusion, on my part and the part of persons I have interviewed with, on the process of obtaining a DEA, NPI, and controlled substance license. I was under the impression that a new FNP needs to only have a license to start a new job and it is most beneficial (financially) to obtain other documents while employed.

DEA, NPI should be obtained by employer. The DEA and controlled substance licenses in IL are linked to your employer

Thanks for info. That's what I thought because the applications mention "current employer/collaborating physician". It seems, pretty consistently, the folks in human resources are misinformed in regards to this process. I really feel like HR has been an obstacle for me in the job search and if I was able to meet with clinical staff I might not have missed out on some great job opportunities. Grrrrrr!
