FNP to CRNA?

Published

Hello everyone,

I've been interested in the CRNA route in addition to completing my FNP this August. I joined the USAF active duty as a new grad and will be doing family practice for the next 3 years. Now, if I get a "moonlight" job on the side as a new grad FNP working in critical care through training by a special MD :D, would that still be considered as critical care experience to get into a CRNA school? I never worked in the ICU as an RN.

I can only answer about the schools in the south. The answer is no. You would probably be able to work less than part time to get the experience you need though. Being an NP could help alot with getting into a program. All programs I know require bedside icu nursing. If you searched you might be able to find a school that will accept it though. I would recommend some ICU experience on a part time or prn basis. Contact the schools you would actually attend and ask them.

Alright so I contacted Vanderbilt and said I needed critical care "ICU" experience. So I looked into the military US Army CRNA program and it seems a better fit for me! They state on their website that I need "acute care" experience and the added thing where I'll be required to take a critical care course for 3 months prior to admission into a CRNA program. I'm going this route....how's it working as an FNP and CRNA? Confusing?
