Any of you here have classmates who were previously foreign medical graduates or MDs in other countries? I have some in our class and they seem to call themselves "MD-RN". Just wondering.

I'm not sure if they can use the MD here if the MD isn't recognized here.

I agree but when these classmates are asked if they are RNs, their responses are they are MD-RN. So I wonder if their MD degree was considered as part of the admission process.

If they graduated with a MD degree, they are a MD. They may not be able to practice because they may not be able to qualify for state licensing, but they still graduated as a MD. It is misleading though to allow them to use the MD-RN, but it no different than a PhD in some other field becoming a nurse.

But is their MD, as a foreigner, something that has any meaning or weight here?

In the nursing field, it shouldn't. If they wanted to be recognize as MDs in the US, then they can take the appropriate steps in that direction but it's illogical to be an RN and insist they are different because of their medical degrees.

Their MD means nothing here unless they get a license. That said, even though they have a degree, it does not mean they can practice medicine. I remember working with a MD who was still working on his English skills and employed as a CNA! Other than administration, I don't believe anyone knew he was a physician prior to coming to the states. I would often ask his professional opinion, but as the "licensed" professional, take his suggestions under advisement but make my own decisions. He went on to take his language tests then go for his medical license. He never used his MD until he received his Texas license and I feel that was the best approach for all.

+1. I'm doing my clinicals right now and there is a FNP student who was a FMG and she started telling the other students what to order, etc etc etc. Turns out it was not what the MD had in mind.
