Florida Southwestern curriculum

Published

This question is for any current or past student at Florida Southwestern State College (formerly Edison State College) in Fort Myers, Florida. I am planning to apply to the ASN program for either Fall 2016 or Spring 2017 admission cycle. I am getting married in October 2016 and will be spending Wednesday-Sunday at the wedding destination. Is it realistic in the first semester of nursing school to take that much time off? Would I be missing clinicals or is it all didactic? Would I be able to arrange my classes in such a way to only have class Mon-Wed?

If missing that much time is impossible I will just wait and start the next Spring, but I'd rather get started sooner than later.

Thanks!

Hi there,

I'm currently a 3rd semester student. No you can't miss any days at all. Not only in the first semester but during the whole program unless there is a family emergency. You can expect to be in class 4 days a week with 1 of those being clinical in your first semester. You don't get to choose your class or clinical times they're structured. Good luck!

Hi- can you share what the schedule is like during the week? Like- what hours more or less can you expect to be in school?

1st semester expect to be in class or clinical 4 days a week. My particular schedule was

Monday- Fundamentals of nursing 9am-12p

Tuesday Fundies lab/practicum from 8am-2p

Wed- clinical 6:30-3

Thurs- health assessment lecture and lab from 8-1:30

*days are longer or shorter depending on when you're assigned time for check offs are and the night before clinical you have to go to the hospital to get your patient assignment for your care plan.

2nd semester it was lecture 8:30-4pm on Tuesday for (adult 1, pharmacology, and mental health) and I had clinical on Friday so you're in school 2 days a week.

3rd semester which I am in currently we are in lecture from 9am-3:30 on Wednesday for maternity, peds, and mental health. Clinicals are scheduled differently. Half the semester you have OB clinicals and half the semester you have peds. I started off with Ob first and had clinicals every Tuesday for 5 weeks. Now I have peds clinicals 2 times a week usually on Tues and Thurs.

Our last and final semester is class on Tuesday all day and a clinical day until preceptorship.

***disclaimer please keep in mind that these were my days and you will most likely not have the same days assigned like mine. You also need to be very flexible while in the program bc things cand and do change from week to week.
