if anyone got into um nursing program post here. :redpinkhe introduce yourself!

Specializes in Neurology, Neurosurgery.

Congratulations on your acceptance. I am a fixed wing pilot with an ATP license. That was my undergraduate degree. I just did not love it enough to make a career out of it with no hopes of a future, (retirement, etc.)

Benjie~ congrats!! I'm really excited about the program. I currently work in Brickell. So how do you like it down here compared to Cali?

Thanks, I'm excited, too. Both Southern California and South Florida appeal to me in different ways. One thing's for sure though, I love living by the beach! I miss California but am glad to be in Florida right now since it has been snowing in CA. Although I do enjoy snow skiing. Once I'm an RN I might just keep living in LA and take short assignments in places like Miami, Hawaii, and maybe in places like Sydney, Australia or London (if it is possible for us to get work there). That's one of the many good things about this career. It is possible to travel and make a living while doing it.

Hey Benjie!!!

It's great to see that CA will be represented out here. How long have you been in Miami?

Has anybody heard that new grad RNs are having trouble finding jobs? I'm reading that on other threads on this site....it greatly concerns me. Perhaps the UM hospitals are good about making sure they hire their new grads? Anybody's input is greatly welcome.

Ooh....one more thing. Has anybody started doing their background check yet? I just got sent all the materials (fingerprint card, lab slip for urine test, etc). I'm still waiting to receive a letter from the University that states what I need to buy to prepare for class (uniforms, matronly white shoes, etc).

I have the background check packet too but I haven't been able to go there and actually get finger printed and everything. And still I haven't even gotten the background request or immunization papers from the school I had to go online and find them myself. From what I've heard we don't find stuff out until the last possible second in this program... and yes I've been reading the posts about not being able to find a job. That really worries me BUT that being said more than 30% of nurses are over 60 (I believe I read that in an article on here some where) so retirement will be coming and there are so many options with nursing we won't all get hired into our dream job first but we have to start somewhere. I don't think we should worry and hopefully by the time we graduate and take the NCLEX the economy will be on the rebound...

What I'm hoping is that the UM hospitals time their New Grad programs with the graduations of UM students.....so if we do well and keep our noses clean we'll get into one of those programs.

hey I'm actually waiting to see if I've been accepted to the program or not. Do you guys mind telling me what your overall GPA's are and your prereq GPA's are. Thank you!! I find out next week if i'm in or not. I have no idea if this program is super hard to get into or not but i pretty much think it is ...

Hey KTMC - I had an overall 3.7 and my prereqs were 3.55 good luck! Let us know if you'll be in school with us!

Howdy KTMC!!! I'll keep my fingers crossed for ya!!! Good luck.

My overall GPA was 3.35 and my pre-req GPA was 3.91.

I hope to see you in May. If it should happen that you don't get in this year apply for early decision next year. I understand that ~75% of the classs comes from the early decision pool.

the weird thing is that i did apply in december but for some reason they hadn't contacted me or updated my file saying i was completing the rest of my prereq's this semester... but i called and jude updated my file and told me to call back this friday!!! i have an overall 3.4 gpa and last semester my prereq's were 3.0 and this semester i'm figuring them to be 4.0 :) so that's gotta be somewhere in the middle. Thanks so much for making this thread. I have been so ready to find out if i'm in the program. I'll let you guys know for sure!! Congrats to all of ya'll!

I found out today that i was accepted into the program :)
